The smell of fresh honey drifting through the window was the only thing needed to wake Basile up. Fresh honey meant a new morning, morning meant breakfast, and breakfast meant honey on toast made by the hands of his favorite cook! He salivated over the very thought of his favorite meal and dashed out the open door of the room only to find his beloved trainer already sitting at the kitchen table without him and popping a spoonful of cereal into her mouth.
"G'morning, Basile," Lian said casually, giving him a small wave. Her hand dropped, though, when seeing her Bulbasaur puff his cheeks and his large eyes water. "Oh. Um... Sorry I didn't wake you up sooner. Thought you'd might wanna sleep more since today's the day."
Huffing, Basile pulled himself up onto the chair next to hers and started chowing down on the meal in his bowl.
"Better finish that fast," Lian commented, which only earned her a look of irritation. "Err... Well, we should get going as soon as we can. Today's the day! And we're going to capture anything green. Right, Basile?"
Lian's father, who had just been eavesdropping on the other side of the wall, proudly strode in and sat across from them at the table. "That's right!" he exclaimed happily. "Day one of the journey! The beginning of everything! The first step of a thousand!" A look of determination flared in his eyes as he asked the two in front of him, "Are you two ready for that?!"
Lian merely "uh-huh'd" while Basile gave a distracted nod. "I'm not sure about the 'thousand step' thing, though."
Lian's father pouted and looked around the kitchen. When not seeing what he was looking for, he got up from the table and disappeared into the living room. Lian and Basile stared after him, wondering where he was going. After a few minutes, he barged back into the kitchen and practically yelled, "Where's your bag?!"
"What bag?"
"Your bag! The thing you have to lug around during the traveling! Don't you have it ready?"
Lian and Basile looked at each other, both wondering why she would be needing a bag. "Uh... Why would I need it?" she asked, looking somewhat confused. "Pokeballs can fit in my pockets."
"Clothes! Potions! Berries! Money! Where will you put those if you don't have a bag?!"
"Dad," Lian laughed, "I can just come home for those, don't worry."
"Y-you can't just come back home!" he exclaimed, sounding a bit exasperated. "A 'pokemon journey' would take longer than that! You'll be out for days, months maybe, traveling for miles and miles just to even find the pokemon you're looking for!"
"If I were to do that, how would I get home?"
Lian's father groaned and would have started another speech if his wife had not rushed into the room, carrying a full backpack and bouquet of Glacidea flowers in her arms.
"D-don't worry!" she panted, dropping into one of the empty seats at the kitchen table. "I've got everything ready for you! Now you can travel as far as you want without having to worry about a thing!"
Lian wore a confused expression while Basile looked almost shocked. "I didn't know we'd be going that far," Lian said simply. "So don't worry, you guys. Basile and I'll just stay around the town and come home whenever we need to. Besides, lots of walking will make Basile tired."
Her parents looked from their daughter to the pokemon they had given her a few months before. As much as they did not want to admit it, they knew what had to be said to get their daughter going. And going. And going farther.
"Honey," Lian's mother sighed. "Daddy and I don't know if you've noticed this or not, but Basile's gaining weight. He has to walk."
"Ssssshhh! Don't say that," Lian gasped. "You guys know Basile's sensitive about his weight!" She looked toward her pokemon and had to admit, this Bulbasaur was putting on a few pounds. Traveling around longer for a day would probably do some good. "I guess traveling longer than we thought wouldn't be too bad."
Before they knew it, Lian and Basile found themselves suddenly ushered out of the house and then to the arch of their little Floaroma Town. The back her mother had earlier was slipped onto her back and the bouquet of flowers were shoved into her arms.
"Make sure to take your time!" her father exclaimed. "Rushing it through will only make things a bore!"
Lian blinked. "But you guys just rushed us--"
"Take a ferry from Canalave and deliver that bouquet to Goldenrod as soon as you can!" her mother added quickly. "The address is in the card attached to it!"
"But, Mom--"
"We love you and take care!" Lian and Basile stared as her parents ran back to their house and closed the door. Basile whined and sprawled on the ground, remembering he had not finished his toast.
"I think they're doing this for our own good," Lian stated, nonchalant. She turned around and faced Route 204. "Guess we should go if we want to get somewhere we can sleep before the day ends."
She looked to Basile, who was still sulking where he lay. "Don't worry. I don't think you gained that much weight... kind of."
