It was early morning. Elias awoke to someone gently nudging him out of his dreams. The first rays of the summer sun were pouring into his room. He breathed deeply, inhaling the salty ocean air. Groggy, he rubbed his eyes and turned to see who was waking him.
"Mom? What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong, Eli dear. I've got a surprise for you. Get dressed and I'll make you some breakfast."
All through breakfast, Elias wondered about the surprise. He kept waiting for his mother to bring him an extravagantly wrapped gift, but she merely hummed sweetly as she did the dishes. He would ask her what it was, but her reply was always the same: "We have a big day ahead of us."
After eating, Elias and his mother left their sweet little waterfront cottage and walked the early morning streets of Vermilion City. The markets were just opening their doors. The delightful smells of the Seaside Confectionery teased Eli's nose as he passed. They walked past the Pokemon Fan Club, still closed for another hour. Eli always enjoyed a detour to the Fan Club on his way home from running errands. He would sit and listen to the fantastic stories of the members' travels. He always wished to be able to see the world like that.
Eli's mother finally stopped in front of the Pokemon Center. His heart jumped. He had a pretty good idea where this was going.
His mother turned to him, looking him up and down with tears welling up in her eyes. "I know you're a little old now, but I think you're ready for this. You're going to be a fine trainer. Now get in there and get your starter from Nurse Joy." She ruffled his hair before sending him in.
Elias sniffed and wiped his eyes as he entered the Center. It was a little overwhelming. He turned to the sound of a kind voice calling him out.
"Hi there, sweetie. You must be Elias? Your mother made an appointment for you to choose your starter Pokemon. Right this way."
He eagerly followed Nurse Joy to a room in back of the center where he had the choice of four pokemon (Pikachu included at Lt. Surge's request). He took his time, weighing his options before he decided. Finally a young charmander was brought to him.
"You don't have to decide right away, but would you like to register a name for your charmander?"
"Mmmm..." Elias stared at the lizard-like creature. "Mmm.. Mosi! <3"
"Alright, Elias and Mosi. You're all set for your pokemon journey!"

Back home, Elias told his mother everything. He started packing after dinner, the brilliant sunset that Vermilion City was famous for filled his room with a deep red-orange glow. His head was swimming with thoughts of adventures to come and his nerves had their limits tested thinking about journeying on his own, away from the safety of his family and community. In the morning, he'd wake up even earlier and leave east down Route 11.
Mosi was already curled up on the rug in Eli's room, fast asleep. Truth be told, Eli was a little intimidated by the fiery creature. Though that was one of the reasons he chose a charmander. Eli wasn't about to follow in the footsteps of the town's gym leader who cares more about winning than caring for his pokemon. Mosi, like most charmanders, is quite mild mannered and feels indifferently toward Elias at the moment, but his loyalty is there.
Right now, the journey is Eli's main focus. His mother had gotten him a trainer's starter kit from the Poke Mart. Tomorrow, his adventure began. He was terribly excited to meet new friends and develop a bond with Mosi.
